I have been in the digital space over 25 years. SEO mostly.I penned this letter earlier to an old friend and client in response to a heads up he was sending to me . I reference a newsletter if you want to receive it DM me with your email…. This is a letter from someone that I have known for a long time. Telling me about Google’s notebook feature. He correctly mentions the podcast part as the best part. As I think it is best part. But not as easy for most as it looks.
Failing what I have called the grandma test. Can my grandma or mom use it? Nope! Which is what most of what AI is. It is for us geeks mostly lol

Thanks doing a newsletter right now on that very thing. Not as easy as it looks though. But cool format

Cool. The speaker says SEO is dying. Google results don’t point to sites as much. Answering questions via content is the new way.
Best,

Lol that is what everyone who doesn’t understand seo or Google says.
Google for the first time has competition.
But ask yourself how much do you use Bing? Chat GPT has been incorporated into Bing for at least a year.
CoPilot is brute force stuffed in our windows machines.
And Google is doing the same on Androids and their ecology of tools.
Myself, please get the hell off my devices until I ask lol.
It is good for somethings, and horrible at others.
FYI for example yesterday Julie and I were discussing philosophical stuff.
The question of self esteem and self worth came up.
And neither of us were happy with our definition.
So I asked chatty. And got an answer.
Funny enough I do not think it was quite correct.
The hook though is that I didn’t have to go through a bunch of websites.
My laziness and need for a fast answer while we talked tempted me into the AI.
I also asked what is the halo effect?
As I realized the concept is close to what I have always called the “be careful when you meet your hero effect”.
That is you admire someone who have met and know under one context.
And then come to really know them and their other contexts/roles. And not so impressive.
Seems to happen lots with people with public personas.
Persona is fascinating -a current source of study to me. Particularly identity.
Anyway, thanks for the heads up. I would be interested in the speaker’s info and to see where my opinions match and contradict.
As far as Google not pointing to sites as much. Or as I say they would rather you stay on Google rather than leave and never come back as Larry Page stated at least a decade ago.
That has been happening a long time.
AI has little to do with that. Or it is just another reason for that. Of course as they use your site as source.
Which shows up by, drum roll please, SEO.
And btw SEO does not just mean my website. It also means all the websites/documents or spaces on other sites I hijack. Like I own pages on X. Or Quora.
And when I can control as many of all the websites crawlable and non crawlable (like parts of Facebook) then I can have all of them rank and while helping me with important citations and links.
As Google loves who they love, loves.
They love Pinterest, so who does Pinterest elevate as a social net, and link off site to?
But Google incestuously they love themselves and their own ecology better than anyone.
And if they can get more of themselves out there giving us the consumer ability to create more content. They leave openings for guys like you and me to exploit. Think of those Google sites you were messing with awhile ago. That was but a flea on the possibilities. Google Business Profile is the first thing I check for when looking at a prospect or clients brand footprint.
BTW I mocked the Google or SEO is dying mantra in like 2007 I think on my old Houseblogger blog. Every time change happens you hear that.
Cliffs notes: All technology adds more complexity to what was seemingly simple. And complexity is opportunity. As we wait for grandma to catch up. When she finally experiences delusions of grandeur, we are too late lol
Google was once a curated list of crawled sites. Then the VCs wanted some ROI. Along came Adwords and encroachments into the list of crawled sites like map packs.
They need we the user to use their stuff. Which often times we do not and they scrap it. Remember G plus? I also went through a laundry list of dead Googles at Houseblogger.
With each iteration that NEEDS you and me to use it for Google’s success. Which make no mistake is to get us clicking on an ad. So they open up their portal to begging us to use and create. So that people use it. And there is your name and address and phone and keywords and relative topics and entities.
As was chanted when Web 2.0 was born.
Everywhere we go, there you are.
Cheers,
