Tony Robbins uses a device to explain human motivation. Towards pleasure/away from pain.
In other words, we will do more to avoid pain, than to gain pleasure. Don’t believe me?
If you have a mere dollar in your hand and I overtly steal it from you and will not give it back. You may get a visceral reaction.
However, if you saw one in the street floating in a sea of rain water. You might not go get that dollar.
Same monetary value. But one motivates you, the other not so much.
One of the joys of having my unique background is that I have been trained in human systems modeling. (Why I am so great at SEO I think. But also, football coaching). That ten dollar word means I can decipher the difference that makes the difference in most any context.
So about last Fall, by pure chance I was introduced to a man who had recently been inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. We had our business conversation.
And then I asked permission for one last question.
“You know as well as I do, that in order to play in the league you have to be one hell of an athlete.
You also know as well as I do. That you must have grown up with guys with even more athleticism.
So I ask you.
Why did you make it, and they did not?”
His answer:
“Two reasons,
“Football IQ. Not everyone can adjust to the speed of the game, and…
I didn’t want to grow up flipping burgers at Jack in the Box . I had to succeed”
I am not sure if you know this or not, but the guy who trained Tony Robbins way back when, was famous for putting a gun to peoples head to get them to change. Not sure how cool that was but one thing they had to change was probably their shorts. But I digress lol
So most anything great done that is beyond average. Is usually motivated by one or many pains. Or as I like to say dragons that the actor must slay.
My guest Leo Costa shares how he let himself down after college. He gave up on his dream.
That pain and a peer pressure about his fat belly motivated him to find a new way to express his inner drive through body building.
And then he studied other great athletes from across the sea in Bulgaria. And discovered their secrets that were unknown here in America.
He decided to share his knowledge which is how I know him. I have one of 990,000 copies of his material Big Beyond Belief.
How he got that material to me is worthy of conversation alone. But this is how he re discovered his passion. And then built it into a massive money maker.
But the adversity was not going to end there. He endured three strokes. Walked away from traditional Physical Therapy and used what he had learned from overseas and experience to self coach himself out of paralyzation.
A big secret to his success is the word Why?
He is insatiably curious about his limits. (I find this true in many athlete and business greats)
I once played ball with the rap mogul Suge Knight. When I first learned of his successes. I thought, “well of course”. I recalled that he was one of the most curious dudes I knew as a player.
Enjoy this interview it really is deep.
